We hired a renowned sandblasting and laser cleaning specialist to clean the gallery of several layers of paint applied over the 227 years of Ka-Plica’s existence. Laser testing revealed three layers: the first white with a pink tint, the second brown, and perhaps the ugliest, the last, a dark brown from the 1980s. They smeared everything with this brown, but only the gallery will regain its former luster. After cleaning, we will consult with the conservator on the color of the varnish or wax to restore this part of our building as closely as possible to its original appearance.
There was a lot of work, and the winter months made access to the building difficult. We are extremely grateful to the contractor from Kudowa-Zdrój for the meticulous work they carried out despite the many inconveniences.
We plan to use the gallery as an office and relaxation area for visiting guests and performers. We can’t wait to reveal the beautiful, round windows that were bricked up in the 1980s to deter vandals. It’s a shame they didn’t survive in some corner of the Ka-Plica…
