Stratigraphic studies… what is that?

According to the current requirements, in order to receive the desired renovation permit from the conservator of monuments, we have to conduct so-called ‘stratigraphic research’. Without this, it will not work because we want to renovate the external and internal elevations. The art conservator from Wrocław has prepared a project for us and in a few days we should receive permission to start these studies. In simple words, it is about making uncoverings on the elevations and determining whether there were any valuable frescoes there, as well as what colors the elevation had on the walls after its construction and what type of paint they were. We are still looking for photos of the interior from the old days. There are many photos from the outside, but so far we have not come across anything that would show what the chapel looked like after 1897. In our history tab, there are many photos of the chapel over time. We invite you to view them. In connection with the planned thorough renovation of the external and internal elevations, together with important elements of their decoration, it is necessary to perform stratigraphic studies, which will allow to determine not only the layout of existing layers in the area in question, but also the type of technological layers, their state of preservation
and the range of occurrence of historical layers.

Our project reads as follows:

RESEARCH LOCATION:
It is planned to perform stepped probes in selected locations, extended by strips of outcrops, in accordance with the identified, historical layering, in parallel with the ongoing research process. Stratigraphic studies on the front elevation will concern the plastered surfaces of the elevation, architectural detail in the form of profiled cornices, window frames and the entrance portal.

How are the remaining renovation works progressing?
